Northern California winters bring the moisture that drives much of the region’s foundation movement. Preparing before the rains start can reduce risk and help you spot problems early.
Clear gutters and downspouts and extend discharge away from the foundation. Check that soil slopes away from the house and that hard surfaces do not direct water toward walls. Look for existing cracks in the foundation or interior drywall and note whether they have changed since last year. In the crawl space, confirm that the vapor barrier is intact and that there is no standing water from previous seasons.
If you already have known settlement or moisture issues, schedule an inspection before heavy rain makes access harder and problems worse. Addressing drainage and structural concerns in the dry season is usually simpler and more effective.
A short pre-winter checklist protects both the structure and your peace of mind through the wet months.
